Most SME websites in Malaysia are not held back by anything exotic. They are held back by four or five fixable issues that compound. This checklist is the order we work through them in client projects.
Start with crawlability, not content
Publishing more pages onto a site search engines struggle to crawl is the most common wasted budget we see. Before a single article is written, confirm that your important pages are indexable and that nothing critical is buried behind scripts or duplicate URLs.
- Check coverage reports for excluded and duplicate pages
- Consolidate parameter and variant URLs with canonical tags
- Make sure every money page is reachable in three clicks
Core Web Vitals are a Malaysian mobile problem
A large share of Malaysian traffic arrives on mid-range Android devices over mobile data. A site that feels fine on office fibre can be painfully slow in the field. Test on throttled connections and fix the largest contentful paint first — usually an oversized hero image or a blocking font.
Map keywords bilingually
Search behaviour here mixes English and Malay, often in the same query. Build your keyword map around how customers actually type, then decide deliberately which pages target which language. Do not machine-translate a whole site and hope for the best.
Local signals still win local searches
For any business with a physical location, Google Business Profile completeness, consistent NAP details, real reviews and LocalBusiness schema do more for enquiries than another blog post. Get these right before scaling content.
Measure enquiries, not rankings
Rankings are a leading indicator; enquiries pay the bills. Set up conversion tracking for form submissions, WhatsApp clicks and calls, then report on those. Any SEO programme that cannot connect work to enquiries is unmanageable.
Fix crawlability and speed first, map keywords the way Malaysians actually search, then scale content — and report on enquiries, not positions.
